Small old Europe in a crowded young world

Reporters United’s Greek story focuses on Athens’ rapid population decline. We use the city’s most prominent characteristic, street art, to conceptualise the oppressed youth fleeing the city, and the effect the country’s economic crisis had on it. To further accentuate the Athenian feeling we incorporated the city’s iconic dark yellow on its old houses, and black and white on the abandoned ones. Since it’s a data project, we used elements of the data provided in the article.

The data analysis on population change in Europe over the past decade – launching Reporters United’s new cross-border collaboration with Tagesspiegel Innovation Lab and 13 other international media outlets – highlights troubling regional disparities. The demographic prospects for Greece are bleak.
